Carson & Lakewood DCS pitch in for charity

March 4, 2026

[02.21.2026 – Long Beach] Eleven Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Service volunteers were on station early to help members of the LASD Motorsports team (www.lasdmotorsports.com) ready the Hotel Maya (www.hotelmayalongbeach.com) for a charity car show. Members helped fill the venue with 130 show cars from vintage to new builds.

Envision Ford of Duarte (www.fordofduarte.com) helped sponsor the event in support of the LASD team’s outreach to high school youth, particularly the Norwalk High School “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow” team. They are led by instructor Ken Cook. The group is part of a specialized “STEM program” for “science, technology, and engineering.”

Students learn advanced automotive skills to compete in high-speed engine building competitions. Learning, teamwork, technology, and safety on and off the track are emphasized as track events are part of the motorsports program, too.

On Saturday, the DCS members staffed a disaster communications outreach booth and assisted deputies and attendees.

Lakewood members Eric Morgan (shown) kept interop going by participating through the ARES South Winlink net at 9:00 a.m. Kudos to ARES South for a well-run net!

Carson members Jim Connor (shown) and Ronnie Williams also set up their go-kit mobiles to work on Winlink and NBEMS setups and skills.

130 show vehicles were in attendance to support the charity cause.
