Emergency Preparedness (TCEP) Field Day

Ladies and Gents,

This is an excellent event! All of you missed it last year. I would like all of you to consider going by the Topanga Coalition for Emergency Preparedness (TCEP) Field Day “Command Post” on Sat & Sun June 23/24, and take a look at what kind of outstanding work our TCEP, DCS and DRT HAM’s do. Many of the TCEP volunteers are also Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Service (DCS) team members. Basically, these folks set up a communications base on the firebreak west of the top of Topanga (see directions below). They use batteries, solar panels, as well as wind and gas generators. They then communicate around the clock via amateur radio and other computer technology systems in 24 hour shifts with other like units and HAM’s in the United States, Canada, and around the world! This is all done for practice and to learn, but it is done for a reason. This training event is done, so that our community disaster radio teams can practice being in contact with other like units in the U.S. and around the world in the event of an actual local or worldwide disaster. Earth quake, wild fire, flood, nuclear war, comet strike, solar flare, system break down, etc. Use your imagination. This is important stuff, and I am proud of our DCS members and TCEP for participating in such an outstanding training exercise and local event. I visited the event last year and was very impressed.

Please consider coming out to observe what is going on in your own back yard (Topanga) on behalf of our community (see directions below). Perhaps this will motivate those of you “sitting on the fence”, to get involved by joining DCS, TCEP or your local DRT.

From the Ventura Frwy – North Bound (101) (least amount of walking) –

Take exit 27 for Topanga Canyon Blvd (South) go 1.2 mi

Turn right at Mulholland Dr go 0.5 mi

Turn left at Mulholland Hwy go 0.7 mi

Turn left at Daguerre Ave go 0.2 mi

At the traffic circle, take the 3^rd exit onto Dardenne St go 0.6 mi

Turn left at Lemans Dr go 0.1 mi

Park and walk up the dirt road past the fire gate go 150 ft
